Eu vi em uma série animada um produto com efeito colateral "getting confused for a wolf" e pensei em montar a estrutura "he got confused for the principal" com o sentido de "ele foi confundido com o diretor" (alguém pensou que ele fosse o diretor). Essa estrutura está correta, tem o mesmo sentido?

Perhaps "mistake for him" (he mistook someone else for the principal). Is that the expression you look for?
...went to the hospital to see my father in the ER, mistook someone else for him, the poor guy was a lot sicker than my dad. I was totally shocked...

I mean, if the other guy has a striking/uncanny resemblance, say, he could be mistaken. A look-alike.
Another context would be that someone else "had (mistakenly) thought he was the principal".
