Como eu digo "engolir água do mar". Tipo: Eu não sei nadar, então a onda do mar veio e me derrubou. Eu bebi e engoli muita água do mar.
Quando você bebe ou engole sem querer, como quando você leva uma rasteira da onda e por não saber nadar, engole água do mar pra caramba ou pouca.

To drink/swallow salt water/seawater.

I think that the verb swallow is more natural in that case. The reader could think of "drink" in terms of something of your own volition (willingly to drink water).
Or the 'mechanical' act of drinking itself as in "This is what you're drinking if you swallow sea water..."
So, I prefer "swallow" here:
I don't know how to swim, so the/a wave came and knock me down and in the process, I swallowed a mouthful of salty water.
Í can't swim, so the waves knocked me down and swept over me, I swallowed water/swallowed a lot of water/swallowed a large amount of water/swallowed a mouthful worth of water.
Adding some parenthetical notes:
I can't swim - it may (and here is the case) that I am not able, I don't know how to swim.
I swallowed water - here is unspecified, but it could be a lot of water, just a mouthful of brine, or something in between. The context could give an idea of the amount.
Of course, those are rules of thumb, nothing set in stone. Sometimes the words can be used interchangeably, my reasoning is based on what would spring to my mind first.
