"Behind the 8 ball" não significa SINUCA DE BICO. Significa "estar por um fio", numa situação difícil (mas não sem saída, como implica o sinuca de bico).

Ambas as expressões também existem em português no esporte SINUCA, mas com significados DISTINTOS.

Quando só falta a última bola para o adversário, que é EXATAMENTE a bola 8, se ele a encaçapar, você já era. Daí a expressão "estar pela bola 8", por um fio (ou atrás da bola 8, da última bola do adversário). Lembrando que a bola 8 é a única que os dois almejam encaçapar AO FINAL, após terem encaçapado as suas bolas primeiro (as menores que 8 para um adversário, e as maiores que 8 para o outro).

Enfim, a expressão da bola 8 NAAAADA tem a ver com sinuca de bico.

I think the concepts are a bit interchangeable sometimes, at least when it means that life (or someone) has thrown you a curveball.
In both cases, there are slim chances and we have a challenging problem. The "unlikely" above doesn't mean impossible, though.

Muitas vezes "catch on" pode ser usado intercambiavelmente, outras não.

O que diriam sobre a expressão "to be in a hot seat"?

Dependendo do contexto, é óbvio, "to be in a hot seat" também pode significar "estar na berlinda".

An expression used for dilemmas where a solution is impossible due to contradictory rules.

Ex. 2: You can't get a job without experience, but you need a job to get experience. It's a catch-22.

The term Catch-22 describes a paradoxical dead-end dilemma. The expression "to be on an eight" (usually said as "behind the eight ball") means to be in a disadvantageous position. The first refers to an impossible circular logic, while the second refers to being at a disadvantage or in trouble.

Catch-22 is a logical paradox; no matter what decision you make, the result is either null or contradictory. Being behind the eight ball is simply a situation of great difficulty or disadvantage, but one that can be overcome with considerable effort.

In Catch-22, there is no apparent way out (the solution is blocked). In the expression with the number 8, the solution is difficult and requires skill, but it exists.

Because of that, I agree to Paulo, when he said:
