"Useless", "a waste of time", and "futile" are great choices.
It is futile/useless/a waste of time to attempt to resist her charms.
The enemy told is it was futile/useless/a waste of time to continue the war.

Daniel, just be careful to use the correct word to persons and the right one to things. To do so, you can use an English-Portuguese dictionary (at this point, but if you level is higher you can use an English-English one).
In my examples most of the words were to persons (some could be to both - as futile ); and the ones from Thomas's answer are more used to refer to things (or other abstract ideas).
