Wouldn't the expression CRY WOLF be correct too? Because CRY WOLF means to ask or cry for help when you don't need it, indeed.
E.g.: "If you cry wolf often, we will stop believing you!

In this case, "cry wolf" would be "dar alarme falso/enganar os outros" (alarmar situações de perigo, quando não é necessariamente situação de perigo.)
Um exemplo é dizer "me acudam!" de brincadeira ou precipitadamente.
