By the way, 'declension' can be synonym with "decline/decay". That is, taking into account that the first language (or 'root language' - my definition here) would be 'perfect', the ones branching of it would be "declension languages".
Another reasoning is that the "root language" ends up "decaying" until it morphs into a 'dead language'. Latin into French/Portuguese/Spanish/Italian etc. (just to illustrate my point here).
Of course you can think of it in a 'decline' as in a vertical organogram of sorts. Take your pick.
