I had used for that expression the word: "banter"
Something like that:
"We had banter". I am not sure whether this is correct or not.

Acho que "to banter" vai geralmente se referir a conversa genial, entre amigos, fazendo brincadeira, etc. "We exchanged glances" pode expressar melhor o que Vc quer dizer. Tem uma canção antiga com "glances in the night," etc.

Parece que banter refere-se a conversas com segundas intenções ou coisa do tipo. É porque "exchanged glances" me pareceu meio direto para ser usado, mas talvez seja o mais apropriado.

Não, "banter" não tem sentido negativo. Mas é pra coisa entre conhecidos.
