Acho que a melhor tradução para off the beaten track seria fora dos lugares comuns e já bastante visitados e conhecidos pelos turistas.

Por exemplo: o Cristo Redentor jamais seria um lugar off the beaten track. Mas uma praia não tão conhecida dos turistas sem dúvida seria um lugar off the beaten track.

An unusual route or destination, as in We found a great vacation spot, off the beaten track. This term alludes to a well-worn path trodden down by many feet and was first recorded in 1860, although the phrase beaten track was recorded in 1638 in reference to the usual, unoriginal way of doing something.

I think it could be, besides the meaning Simon has given along with that of yours, and I would add: remoto, fora da preferência dos circuitos habituais, locais menos viajados (trilhados também), locais menos convencionais (para turismo, trilhas, caminhadas etc - muitas vezes por serem mais afastados.), locais mais "exclusivos", lugares "menores" para efeito de turismo, trilhas e caminhos menos "batidos (inclusive não literalmente aqui, pode ser uma figura de linguagem.), lugares e cenários que são verdadeiros tesouros desconhecidos (pela maioria dos "domingueiros" e "feriadeiros" [*] por exemplo!). etc...
