Como dizer "Retratar-se" em inglês

A palavra retratar possui duas traduções em inglês:

• retract, que é mais informal
• recant, que é bem formal

Dessa forma, cabe ao falante decidir qual utilizará dentro do contexto apresentado. Se há a necessidade de apresentar mais formalidade ou não.

Exemplos com retract:

• He was forced to retract an opinion too liberal for the time. [Ele foi forçado a retratar uma opinião muito liberal para aquele tempo.]
• Refusing to retract, he was banished. [Por recusar a se retratar, ele foi banido.]

Exemplos com recant:

Além disso, há duas outras expressões que podemos utilizar com a mesma ideia, contudo possuem traduções diferentes.

Take (something) back é retirar algo que foi tido, podendo ser entendido também como retratar. Contudo, nem sempre que se retira algo que disse, quer dizer que a pessoa está arrependida ou que está se desculpando, há mais uma ideia de se voltar atrás no que foi falado:

• As soon as she said it she wished she could take it back. [Assim que ela disse aquilo, ela desejou poder voltar atrás.]
• You had better take back what you said about my sister. [É melhor você retirar o que disse sobre minha irmã.]
• I won't take what I said back! She's a twit! [Eu não vou voltar atrás no que disse! Ela é uma idiota!]

Por fim, withdraw é retirar, e fica menos implícito ainda a ideia de desculpas:

• Keep it up and I might decide to withdraw my invitation. [Continue assim e talvez eu decida retirar meu convite.]
• The lawyers withdrew the accusation. [Os advogados retiraram a acusação.]
• He withdrew his remarks and said he had not intended to cause offense. [Ele retirou seus comentários e disse que não tinha intensão de ofender.]

Assim, mais uma vez, cabe ao falante decidir.

Para o seu exemplo, podemos dizer:

• After unfairly offending several people, I see myself obliged to recant them.
• After unfairly offending several people, I see myself obliged to retract.

Levando-se em conta as definições "admitir um erro" e "pedir desculpas" para o verbo "retratar-se", sugiro utilizar "admit you're wrong", "admit your mistake" e "apologize".

No exemplo da pergunta, sugiro apologize:

Depois de ofender várias pessoas injustamente, me vejo na obrigação de me retratar com elas.
After unfairly offending a lot of people, I feel I have to apologize to them.

Em outros contextos:

He talked with her and admitted he was wrong. [Ele conversou com ela e se retratou.]
