"Mate" é aquele cara que você convive em alguns âmbitos, mas que não é seu amigo de verdade.
Me vem a cabeça somente sois exemplos:

Vale atentar a diferenças de contexto, visto que uma mesma palavra pode chegar a possuir dezenas de significados distintos. "Mate" nem sempre significará "colega" ou "camarada". Esta é uma acepção informal da palavra, muito mais comum em inglês britânico ou australiano.
Em seu sentido primário, "mate" é o parceiro (macho ou fêmea) em uma relação sexual entre dois animais, por exemplo. De modo similar, o verbo "to mate" refere-se ao ato de acasalamento entre dois animais.

Yes it does.
But in "truck mate" it might have borrowed the concept/notion, not the meaning per se. Since if someone works with you it´s only natural that he/she is a mate, there´s that camaraderie between you as a team.
For the meaning "ajudante" would be more like it, and there´s the "fitter´s mate" (ajudante de mecânico) to corroborate it.
Granted, in North America "truck driver helper", "driver helper" or "truck helper" would the word more used to it, as Sra. Tradutora have let us know by her insightful comment.
