Por que do e não did, nesta frase ?

Não cabe outro did aí. "Você fez o melhor que pôde"

Em português, empregamos o verbo poder no pretérito perfeito, já os falantes nativos empregam-no no presente para denotar o passado.

The sentence, perhaps was in informal and colloquial ways, so not necessarily hand in hand with grammar. To my thinking it should be "You did the best you could do."
However, nobody will sue you if you use "can" (though, the can bit make the sentence a little ambiguous.)

E se a frase fosse: you did the best you could do.

Eu traduzi como: você fez o melhor que podia.
Por que o uso do "do" neste caso, não ficaria certo só o could, que é podia?

It´s not informal/colloquial there, one can use both:

"you did the best you can do."
(você fez o melhor que você "pôde/pode fazer". Ou até que "podia fazer" - em qualquer tempo.). De uma certa forma, o que alguém/qualquer um pôde fazer.
The emphasis on the current time, and it takes into account the consequences of the action is not over.

"you did the best you could do."
Você fez o que podia fazer. (no momento em que você tomou a ação era a coisa certa ou correta, naquele momento/oportunidade, que passou.)
The emphasis is on the time you finished the action (in the past) and it suggests the consequences are in play (on the whole), it may suggest that the "you" regret your action, but there´s no getting back.
Anyway, the person saying that is saying that you did the right thing, or proper given the circumstances.

So, the translation in your last post is correct.
