Bound to lead - Tradução em português

Hello Folks, good morning. I´m having problems with a text from Ludwig Von Mises, check it out:

"They searched for the law of mankind´s destiny and evolution. But even those thinkers whose inquiry was free from any theological tendency failed utterly in these endeavors because they were commited to a faulty method. They dealt with humanity as a whole of with other holistic concepts like nation, race or church. They set up quite arbitrarily the ends to which the behavior of such wholes is bound to lead."

I would translate to something like that:

"Eles investigaram a lei do destino e da evolução da humanidade. Mas mesmo estes pensadores, cuja investigação estava livre de qualquer tendência teológica, falharam completamente nestes tentos, pois eles estavam comprometidos com um método falho. Eles lidavam com a humanidade como um todo ou com outros conceitos holísticos como nação, raça ou igreja. They set up quite arbitrarily the ends to which the behavior of such wholes is bound to lead"

I don´t know how to translate the last part of the text, could someone help me? Thanks!
