A (dazed) and confused octopus feels all thumbs in a barrel of crabs. It doesn't know or never knows which crab it'll grab next! So, it seems to me that anyone feeling like a confused octopus will simply not function, will fail to take an important decision or decisions when it comes to the crunch (or when the crunch comes).

Como complemento,eu diria que esta expressão pode estar fazendo uma referência ao fato desta pessoa(Clarissa) ter muitos meios de alcançar algo,mas não saber qual escolher,por onde começar.Talvez esta seja a semelhança com um "confused octopus".
