"In a hole" here is metaphorically "in a financial hole". If you "spend yourself in a hole" it means that you "dig yourself a hole by spending".
It´s really true "algumas pessoas cavam o próprio buraco, pelos seus hábitos (compulsivors ou impensados) de compras, pelo motivo de não controlar seus hábitos de comprar/de compras".
It´s a sloppy translation of mine, but you get the idea.
The first law of holes, or the law of holes, is an adage which states that "if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging". Digging a hole makes it deeper and therefore harder to get back out...
