Como dizer ''Deixar em aberto'' em inglês

Why did the authors leave that up in the air?

Um acaba morrendo, e a outra foge. O mais interessante é que só tem alguns diálogos falando sobre o paradeiro da mulher, mas nada profundo, só deixando em aberto em aberto se ela morreu ou não. E a história depois finge que ela morreu, sem explicações sobre. Por que os autores deixaram isso em aberto?, sendo que ela no final "está morta" pra história?

He dies, and she flees. The plot somehow suggests that she died too, but no elaboration about it/but in workaround ways (from dialogues referring to her whereabouts) only hinting but then leaving the reader with an ambiguous feeling/the guessing whether she actually died or not (leaves it open to interpretation)... Then the plot 'decides' (or pretends - or is positive that...) she is dead. Again, without a reasoning/elaborating further about the events.
Readers are left speculating whether she actually died or not, why trying to leave the readers whether she died or not? Since if we know she is dead from past chapters?
