Como dizer "Impor respeito" em inglês

Mas, no seu exemplo, eu realmente não sei se é a melhor forma.

Eu acho que seria:

"Death penalty commands respect in society."

Por que estaria errado? Não entendo.

"impor respeito", a meu ver, é uma ação pessoal (feita por uma pessoa)
Qdo a Anita escreveu "a pena de morte impoe respeito na sociedade", nós entedemos o que ela quis dizer. Talvez alguém mais "cricri" pudesse sugerir que ela reescrevesse, como por exemplo: "O fato de a pena de morte existir cria imposição de respeito por parte da sociedade perante à nação" - mas aí ia ficar mais difícil ainda de traduzir, rs!

O que eu quis dizer é que nós entendemos o que ela quis dizer, mesmo "personificando" um verbo impessoal. Resta saber se isso também é entendível por nativos da língua inglesa.

Flávia, quando eu terminei de ler sua resposta eu logo pensei "Vamos descobrir!', rs, e fui perguntar a um nativo, mas ele pimeiramente entendeu que eu estivesse perguntando se ele concorda! Um confusão! Veja o diálogo:

'Impose respect' me passa a idéia de algo que é obrigado, conseguido por meio da força, tipo algo que o Hitler faria. Eu recomendo o uso de "command respect".

não acho que "impose respect" esteja estreitamente relacionado ao uso da força até mesmo pq quando eu trabalhava em miami o gerente que trabalhava comigo utilizava essa frase e sei muito bem que não se tratava disso.

I think that one would command respect when it has been earned or it is deserved.
To impose respect (which sounds like good English to me, by the way) is more difficult and would have to be be forced upon the situation
