Como dizer "tentativa" em inglês

Tanto try quando trial significam tentativa. Mas, em inglês, para falar a expressão "tentativa e erro" convencionou-se dizer "trial and error".

Então posso usar os 2?

Pode usar os dois quando quiser falar "tentativa". Quando for falar "tentativa e erro" o "certo" (normal) é "trial and error".

"Trial and error" deve ser entendido como um método de chegar a uma solução adequada, pelo qual 'testamos', ou 'experimentamos' vários valores, ou ferramentas, etc., até chegarmos à aquela que resolve o problema.

A trial, in a judicial sense, is where the evidence is evaluated, measured, etc., for accuracy. So we talk of 'trying' the evidence: putting it to the test.

So in this context 'error' doesn't just mean being 'wrong'. It means, at each step of the test, how far away from the ideal solution are we?

Para dizermos "tentativa" em inglês, minhas sugestões são: "try", "attempt"(mais formal), "trial"(apenas na expressão fixa "trial and error" - tentativa e erro) e ainda "shot" - sim, "shot" também pode ser usado como "tentativa" em inglês. Trata-se de um termo amplo.

Basicamente, as opções mais simples de usarmos são "try" e "attempt", a meu ver. Temos que ter cuidado ao usar "shot", a fim de não criarmos algo que simplesmente não existe em inglês.
