Mas "There was" não quer dizer "Havia" ? Como que é "Tinha" em inglês?

O verbo "ter", além de "possuir"(have), é usado como "haver", "existir" (there is, there are).

Exemplos:

Eu tenho um livro. = I have a book.

Tem um gato sobre a mesa. = Há um gato sobre a mesa. = There is a cat on the table.

O passado é "tinha".

Tinha um gato sobre a mesa. = Havia um gato sobre a mesa.

"Ter" no sentido de "haver, existir", é expresso com "there is"(singular) e "there are"(plural). O passado é "there was" e "there were".
