To be "with it" or "out of it"
Cognitive psychologist Ellen Langer studies conditions under which people are either "mindful" ("with it", in popular language) or "mindless" ("out of it"). And she gives this example of mindless behaviour in the article at http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/e ... sness.html:
"Once, when Langer was paying for an item at a store, a clerk noticed that the back of her credit card wasn’t signed. After asking her to sign it, the clerk compared the scrawl on the receipt with the one on the card, to insure that no fraud was being committed. That, says Langer, is perfect mindlessness."
Perhaps you have another interesting example of mindless behaviour you've observed lately. I can't give you any personal ones right now because I'm right out of it looking at the snow piling up outside that I gotta go out and shovel before nightfall.

Mindful/with it:
By the article definition it is “a state of conscious awareness in which the individual is implicitly aware of the context and content of information.”
with it Slang
1. Aware of or knowledgeable about the latest trends or developments.
2. Mentally responsive and perceptive: I'm just not with it today.
out of it Informal
1. Not aware of or participating in a particular group, pursuit, or trend.
2. Disoriented or inebriated.
==============================
==============================
