O significado desse verbo é bastante semelhante com o que acontece com um liquido que passa por um funnel, um tubo vem estreito para chegar a outro lugar.

Complementando, funnel é literalmente afunilar, como substantivo obviamente é funil.
Funnel (noun): A tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used for guiding liquid or powder into a small opening.
(Verb): Guide or channel (something) through or as if through a funnel.
