Overall - Tradução em português

Olá Pessoal,
Segue minha dúvida, sobre uso do overall, que a princípio tem tradução no sentido de "acima de tudo", mas na maioria dos lugares onde vejo aplicação de overall essa tradução não encaixa! Segue um exemplo:
Extensive reading is an approach to language teaching in which learners read a lot of material in the new language. They read it independently from the teacher at their own pace. They read for general, overall meaning, and they read for information and enjoyment. They are also encouraged to expand their reading comfort zone – the range of material that can be read easily and with confidence.
Na Segunda linha temos o "overall meaning", qual melhor tradução pra isso?
Alguém tem mais dica sobre o uso do overall?

Vejo "overall" mais no sentido de "global".

Acredito que em muitos casos "overall" pode ser uma outra maneira de se dizer "general".

Sugestão. Ali overall figura como adjetivo. "Com a leitura constante cria-se uma maneira de ensinar a língua, na qual os estudantes procuram ler o máximo que podem na língua-alvo ou a seu bel-prazer e isso sem depender do professor. [Ainda assim] Os estudantes (devem procurar/procuram) entender o que leem pelo sentido geral das palavras. Também devem sentir prazer em ler."

Na frase foi usado "They read for general, overall meaning", como seria a tradução somente neste trecho, do "general" e o "overall" juntos.

Já quase respondi essa msg agora pouco, mas fiquei intrigada... Aparentemente, o autor só quis dar ênfase no sentido de "geral/global", por isso usou as duas palavras... mas, consultando o significado das mesmas, e principalmente analisando as ocorrências do uso de ambas as palavras juntas... algo me faz pensar que "overall" é maior do que "general"... só não sei se isso faz sentido, e não faço idéia de como eu traduziria algo que é "mais global" do que "global"

TESTE DE NÍVEL
