We all sat silent in the places we had chosen – Mrs. Vesey still sleeping, Miss Fairlie still playing, Miss Halcombe still reading – till the light failed us. By this time the moon had stolen round to the terrace, and soft, mysterious rays of light were slanting already across the lower end of the room.

I would go for "moved stealthily in an arch, its trajectory forming a circle.
The terrace here is the center or axis, indeed the path isn´t a circle but the shadow trajectory goes like it is giving the impression of going around the terrace, "embracing" the house. The slanting rays suggests that view, kinda centripetal "shadows".
Across the lower end of the room - do outro oposto ao final da sala/compartimento/aposento.
