Argue back - Tradução em português

No meu entender, "argue back" na frase All I saw was him arguing back so I wanted to understand the details significa "rebater argumentos", "contra-argumentar".

Mas meu cliente contestou a tradução dizendo: "Please check whether the translation of "rebater argumentos" is accurate, as in this sentence, the team leader is giving their own reasons for the slow progress of the work but does not reflect on themselves, rather than refuting the author."

Para mim a tradução está correta, alguém pode me ajudar nesse impasse?
