I'm not sure if "par" originated with "parity" (an equivalent value = uma equivalência), or if it really became popular with the game of golf, where we talk of the number of strokes typically necessary to complete a hole.

There's a common expression, "par for the course," meaning "that's what we would expect from this person/situation isn't it?":

--He's confusing apples and oranges in his explanation again.
--That's par for the course.

which I'm sure must come from the world of golf!

Residential customer satisfaction with electric utilities nationally averages 625 on a 1,000-point scale. Ameren Illinois' score was 608. Among large Midwestern utilities, only Chicago-based Commonwealth Edison had a lower score, 579. St. Louis-based Ameren Missouri had a score of 611. The average score for a large Midwestern utility was 617.''
