That is, without having to work for it...
There is also another circumstance, that of people that think they can "have their cake and eat it" (to enjoy the good part of something without dealing with the bad parts). It applies metaphorically to those that thought something would be easier than it is factually.
Usually said by somebody else (in hindsight, sort of), almost in a 'ironic' way (pensou que ia ser fácil ! De mão beijada) referring to some event you can't have it both ways.
One related expression is that one "to think something would be a cakewalk".
That is, without having to work for it...
