"Play sister" may be a better choice. I didn't say it for reasons of political correctness, but it's an Afro-American term for a female is a sister in every way except blood relationship. ("Play cousin" is another often heard term for a good friend.) I do not know, however, how many non-Blacks are going to understand. The trouble with "soul sister" is that it means "Black woman" without indicating friendship, affection, love, etc. It's enough, by the way, to say "the sister" in many contexts to indicate the race. This makes sense when you remember the importance of the Protestant church in Black history, and the tradition of calling fellow church goers "brother" and "sister".

I am posting this in case anyone things I am inventing the meaning. rsrsrs A soul sister is merely a Black female. A soul mate is an entirely different term. Soul means Black, Afro-American. Take a look at some of its uses:

soul music = Afro-American music (Did "Soul Train" get to Brazil? Lots of soul music!)
soul food = Afro-American food (Love peach cobbler! In Brazil, feijoada, vatapá, acarajé, etc. probably started out as soul food.)
Soul City = Afro-American part of Saigon.
"We've got more soul..." = Lyrics from an Afro-American song from the 1960s.
Soul Kitchen = Name of Afro-American restaurant
