Não se costuma usar o equivalente 'poor' e sim “underresourced” and “underprivileged” .

financially embarrassed: "I'm afraid I can't come to the restaurant with you. I'm financially embarrassed at the moment."

They avoid using words like "fat","thin" and "poor" because they often cause embarrassment.
