Hi there, guys. With "they didn't get hurt" doesn't necessarily mean that they didn't hurt themselves."
There is this piece of news about a car accident:
No one was injured when a car crashed through a storefront window in Lower Sackville, N.S. Around noon Friday...
An elderly gentleman was driving the car when it crashed through the front of the store. His wife was in the passenger seat.
“I care about the people who come into my store, so I'm very fortunate that they didn't get hurt.”
Ref. atlantic.ctvnews
In such case the owner of the store was referring to some likely costumer or employee around, it was in the sense of "that no one was hurt" (or "the people that come to my store" didn't get hurt).
But if the car had hurt some people, they would get really hurt, but not 'themselves'.
The point is, we can't just replace "they didn't hurt themselves" by "they didn't get hurt.".
There is the case of two "trippers" that tripped from the top of a starway and fell over each over at the bottom. They had padded clothes, they were professional trippers hired to a movie shooting. In that case they "didn't get hurt." and we could also state that they "didn't hurt themselves".
