"He had been lied to and stabbed in the back by people that he thought were his friends."

What's the point of this message? I don't understand if they have put him down and stab his back ou simply your "friends" don't tell him the truth about something and he was,therefore, feeling stabbed because of this...

If someone can enlighten this for me, that's sure I'll be a lot grateful!
