Running on its side - Tradução em português

Eu já tentei interpretar essa passagem por várias vezes.

The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs. Shears's house. Its eyes were closed. It looked as if it was running on its side, the way dogs run when they think they are chasing a cat in a dream. But the dog was not running or asleep. The dog was dead.

O que estava correndo do lado de quem? E o que parecia, o cachorro ou os olhos dele? Se forem os olhos, eles não estão fechados? Já cheguei a pensar que haveria olhos correndo ao lado do cachorro. rs
E não tem nada antes disso que possa elucidar a questão. Só um 'It was 7 minutes after midnight'.
