for personal gain, in his/her/their own interest (ou)
without personal gain/benefit, in a disinterested fashion
She contributed time and effort to the campaign in a disinterested fashion, always insisting on anonymity.
It might have been in his interest/to his benefit to have it known that he gave money to the poor, but he was not interested in honours or recognition.
I am a Brazilian deep down./ I am essentially Brazilian. / Deep down I am Brazilian.
I acted from the heart. / That came from deep down.
He is pure of heart.
His essence is humble and mild, despite the gruff exterior.

So,in this case, the best would be:

I helped the beggar with some money, it may be considered not (so) right, but I followed my heart just the same.
I helped the beggar with some money, I followed my heart, even if many
don´t approve. (also "even if many wouldn´t approve)

I don´t think it´s the usual, but you could say "I have helped from the bottom of my heart/I have helped expecting nothing in return/...because I meant it (not just for show)" etc.
