He has only six months to live.

On the other hand:
Ele tem apenas seis meses de vida.
He is only six months old.

Doctors gave him only six months of life.

This sounds like a literal translation. "...six months to live" sounds much more natural.

I was remarking to Thomas that even native speakers can be thrown off in translation especially where there is only a minimal difference between two languages. This looks like a good example.
I was given 6 months to live.
