Falsos Cognatos: Pare

Eu acho que um dos problemas de alguns falsos cognatos está um tanto na pronúncia das palavras, pois o inglês não tem regras para pronúncias de palavras, que nem o português. E a pronúncia é um dos maiores problemas no aprendizado do inglês.
Se alguém lhe falar péâr e seu inglês não for lá muito bom você não entenderá se é pare, pêra (pear) ou pair (par) já que as 3 palavras tem a mesma pronúncia. Pare a pair of pears (péâr â péâr âv péârs). Descasque um par de pêras. É complicado.

O exemplo de pare a pair of pear foi só para mostrar a confusão da pronúncia, já que o correto seria pare two pears, pois pair significa casal, par.

While technically correct I can not recall anyone using pare to mean trim or cut nails. The only sense that I have seen pare used in, is to pare a fruit or vegatable or to reduce the side of an object such as a book. Examples are: "Please pare that apple.", "By careful editing you can pare the size of this book from 900 pages to 700.

A paring knife is a short bladed knife used to pare or peal a fruit.
