O que me chamou a atenção nessa frase foi o uso do the, em vez do this. Visto que, assim que ela joga o lenço nele, ela deveria ter dito I don't want this thing (Eu não quero essa coisa!). Assim, nesse contexto, o I don't want the thing! tem algum outro sentido, tipo um "Eu não quero desculpas!", ou a troca do this por the nesse caso é irrelevante?
