Estava procurando algumas coisas no dicionário (Longman) e achei isso muito interessante...
São diversas maneiras de dizer "Cortar"... Vejam:

Chop down: To cut down a tree, using an axe = Talhar
Slice
To cut bread, vegetables, or meat into thin pieces = Fatiar
Dice
