Estava procurando algumas coisas no dicionário (Longman) e achei isso muito interessante...
São diversas maneiras de dizer "Cortar"... Vejam:

Chop
To cut vegetables, meat, or wood into pieces = Picar
Chop down: To cut down a tree, using an axe = Talhar
Slice
To cut bread, vegetables, or meat into thin pieces = Fatiar
Dice
To cut vegetables into small pieces = Cortar em Cubos
Peel
To cut the outside part off an onion, apple etc = Descascar
Grate
To cut cheese or vegetables into small pieces by rubbing them against a special tool = Ralar
Carve
To cut pieces from a large piece of meat = Trinchar (Também: Entalhar, Esculpir, Cinzelar, Gravar)
Saw

Snip
