Indeed expressionism brought out the raw emotions, the inner feelings from the artist (but then of the man of the streets as well), it was a reaction to the (uptight and conformist) world and society outside (same can be said of art, before the Expressionism).
In it the artist turned within, and sometimes his works freely expresses themes like fear of death, despair, hatred, love, jealousy etc.
It was an artistic momevement with emphasis on emotion and raw reality (perhaps a bit exaggerated, but that was the way it was with the world, at the time).
