I think ''throw candies'' wouldnt be a good way of saying what you want
here's my suggestion:
Ex: Santa Claus came here and distributed/gave candies to the children.
For sure there are other ways of saying it.

Hi folks, just to support what gabrielock said 
Although the idea of throwing candies might be weird, we should remember that experiences, traditions and stuff like that are quite different around the world. Santa is something totally apart from Brazilian culture, but he is accepted and nowadays we can identify with him. Where does Santa come from? Maybe doen't matter...
The sentence: "Santa throws/threw candies..." Is possible to be said and such a thing happens at least in parades.
