Modal Perfect Tense
I was reading some news about the 320 aircraft that crashed down lately in the french alps. And then I came across this structure
(...)That small piece of information about the descent means that "the pilot could have been trying to make an emergency landing" (...).
According to the part of the sentences in the quotes, is it the best translation in português "O piloto podia estar tentando um pouso de emergência"?
I guess, as we didn't have the determined time in the sentences, the sentence was written with the perfect tense, right?
If not so, we would have there "the pilot could be trying". And the name for this verb tense "conditional perfect progressive"?
Please some help and tips about this.
Thanks
