Kevin Drum, um blogueiro político americano bem conhecido, recentemente escreveu o seguinte no seu blog http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum:

"In America, no one wants to listen to self doubt. Also in America, our reporters don't have a working knowledge of arithmetic, which underlies practically every topic commonly reported on the front page or the evening news. Somehow, I suspect the latter makes the former a lot easier."

A minha pergunta é a seguinte: você entende ao que ele se refere quando usa a expressão "the latter makes the former a lot easier"? A referência é aos fatos da sentença anterior:

The latter: "our reporters don't have a working knowledge of arithmetic"
The former: "In America, no one wants to listen to self doubt."

Quer dizer, não saber aritmética funcional não é problema pra jornalista porque nenhum jornalista nem minimamente admite ter dúvidas sobre qualquer coisa.
