Pode-se adequar o my a their, our, his ou a her, dependendo de quem for surpreendido. A forma ''much to the surprise of (the/all, etc)'' também pode ser utilizada.

Exemplos:

A massive pod of dolphins come to visit Wellington Harbour, much to the surprise of the locals (para a surpresa dos moradores).

Much to our surprise (para nossa surpresa), the results were even better than with diesel fuel, depending on the condition of the engine.
