Uma outra expressão útil e frequente seria "to gloss over":

He glossed over some of the detaits in his account of the events. The whole truth didn't really come out.

As expressões não são idênticas. Frequentemente, a conotação de "to gloss over" conterá um elemento de crítica negativa, no sentido de que algo foi omitido indevidamente.

"To skim" é bem mais neutro, no sentido de omitir detalhes simplesmente por não serem importantes na ocasião.

Sim, "Small details" é natural/usado em inglês. Não concordo com a definição de que todo detalhe tem que ser pequeno. A destruição das Torres Gêmeas nos EUA é um detalhe na luta contra o terrorismo - com certeza não é pequeno.

Well, yesterday, I got surprised to have listened from my teacher at the University that what I always hear on CNN, for instance, it is incorrect.

He told me that natives commit the mistake of saying "small detail", when they should be saying just "detail". His explanation was based on the fact that a "detail" is already supposed to be "small", thus rendering unnecessary and incorrect to mention "small".

I can understand why some people would consider it a mistake (for the reason you mentioned) but I also suspect that a lot of people ~ including me ~ wouldn't even notice if you said small detail.
For me a detail is a part of a whole ~ and some details [parts] are smaller than others
