Question: How long can you survive without the Internet?

Example of answers:

- Not even a single day, I'm addicted to it;
- Not much time, once I use this for professional purposes, to keep in contact with friends and members of the family who live in other cities, to do financial transactions, and also for entertainment and study.
- A maximum of a week, otherwise I wouldn't be able to manage all emails, Orkut, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Linkedin, etc etc etc...
- I could live perfectly without Internet access, this is not essential in my life.

I nearly went crazy when I spent a week away from my PC. The repair shop I took it to spent more than seven days to fix it. And when they did, they returned it with one of its three HD drives unhooked. They also charged me R$60 just to unscrew the casing plus another R$100 for a new G-Force video card which they easily installed in. On top of that, the repair shop's Nestlé automated coffe machine repeatedly failed to work as it swallowed the coins I repeatedly kept putting in it. :x

Flavia may I suggest the use of since in place of once, and it or this medium as a substitute for this.

Marcio,

I am sure it is an oversight or typo but I think you meant to say ...easily installed in it. On top...

Otherwise excellent grammar, composition and word choice, Very Good Indeed, are you sure you are not a native of the U.S.A.?

I definitely have problems with "once" and "since"...
tks, Bill!

Since I started using the Internet when I was well over 50 years old, and I do remember how to use a dial type telephone (heck, I can even remember how to use a crank type telephone), and how to write with a pen and use snail mail, and how to read a newspaper or a book, I could survive without the Internet for the rest of my life.

That is not to say that I would not miss it, but that it is not a necessity for me, as well as for a lot of us old fossils. So if someone does pull the plug on the Internet and cell towers us old timers will again have the upper hand. Humm, Just think how nice it would be to go to a movie or a nice restaurant, without a cell phone ringing, or to speak to a young person who didn't text while trying to talk to you. ;) Humm, where is that plug. ;)

Bill, thank you for correcting the omission of the word. And no, I have never visited the US, but I plan to.

Have a fine day,

Regards.

Kind regards
Ester,

If I may offer some suggestions to improve your post I would like to see something like this, "It would be very difficult for me to live without the internet, because I use it to keep a diary, and to do research for my PhD studies."

I think your biggest problem is construction, or the placing of your words, English is very different from Portuguese, but it will come with practice.

I hope this helps you a little.

Marcio_Farias 12570 1 23 212
Bill, it seems to me that by "I work diary" Ester might have meant, "I work daily" instead. She may have thought Portuguese where she should have thought English. Or so I think.

Marcio,

Very good point, then her error here would just be spelling, and in that case the last part of the sentence should read, "... I work with it daily doing research for my PhD studies." this makes more sense.

Thank you for a different point of view, I can not think in Portuguese at all and sometimes have a hard time with English.

I'm addicted to using the internet.
Yannasan,

I would like to suggest that your reply be rewritten to read something like this, "I can't survive without the internet, so I have to use it every day. If I don't, I feel like something is missing. I'm addicted to using the internet."

To a Portuguese speaker, the proper construction of an English setence can be very confusing, but with practice it becomes easier.

Good Luck and I hope this helps you.

I have no idea about how long I can survive without the internet, just because I'm so accustomed to using the Internet daily, as if it becomes part of my routine. I think I'm addicted to using the internet, I also use the internet before go bed every night through my cell.

Marco,

I think I would prefer to see something along these lines.

"Actually very little time, since I use the internet for research in my studies of English, Math, PC, the news, etcetera. I think the internet is of little value when you do not use it to improve your knowledge."

I hope you can gain from this post.

Bruno,

Please consider this rewrite, I think it is more concise and clear.

"I don't think I can survive long without the internet, because most of the research that I do for my studies I do online."

Let me know what you think and if it says what you were trying to communicate.

Logan,

I only have one minor suggestion on this post.

" ... as it has become part of my routine. ..."

Otherwise Excellent work.

I just CAN'T or COULDN'T NEVER live without it, because.. it is one of those most important things on the day-by-day of a person, and it really, really matters for the mental sanity of the people, in general. The internet for me, it's so much cool and interesting, obviously with my caution with the internet addicting (I don't), and with my worrying with another things to do, like take care of the house and studying. When I had to leave the internet for a time, it was when I had to travel to a place that internet couldn't be used, like on the beach, that in my case, I've got no laptop to use there, and it was question of a good time, like.. 2 weeks. (:

Even though it's very hard to be without my internet, since I'm in a calm and beautiful place, where I can appreciate the nature, or when I'm having fun with my friends, only in these cases, I can survive for... one week! It's too much, but I can handle it!

Probably not more than one week as far as I use it for professional purposes keeping contacts with customers. I also use it to check the news, to do financial transactions, to have some fun and, of course, to study English.

I've never thought that I could survive without internet. But when I saw myself two months without it, I realized that I'll not die if this happen. I use the internet principally to talk to my boyfriend that lives in other city and to do the homeworks of the university.
