Spilled down through - Tradução em português

A luz passou/passava pelas barras de janelas inalcançáveis - muito altas.

A função do "down" (junto com o verbo "spill") é dar um sentido de "descer/cair/se esparramar (em direção ao fundo - da sala, compartimento, no caso. Ou ainda "para o interior (de/do) compartimento/cômodo/recinto", etc...

Mas o verbo spill significa cair, derramar, que só pode ser em um sentido (de cima pra baixo)e o down passa a idéia de "para baixo", seu uso não fica desnecessário? Isso não cria uma redundância?

Finally, "spill" have the sense of "derramamento, caída'" de líquido. So, the case in point uses the "Spill down through", where the "through" gives the idea of "através" so it´s not a mere "derramamento" but the "discharge of sunrays" in a gentle way.

De outra forma não diriam ou escreveriam os falantes nativos. Aprenderam a usar o "down" dessa forma de seus pais, com seus amigos, entreouviram em conversas, leram nos livros, viram nos filmes etc.

Veja mais esse caso:

"She inhaled to calm herself, but more tears spilled down her cheeks."

Aqui, se dissermos apenas "spilled her cheeks" (sem o "down"), teremos a impressão de que as lágrimas "espalharam o rosto dela", e não "desceram rosto abaixo".

"spilled her cheeks" (sem o "down") também não faria sentido nenhum.

In "Spill down", imply the idea of "in a descending direction", so we can say that something "spilling down" as some "flowing in a descending direction", sometimes an overflowing (in this sense it´s very usual indeed).
Other examples:
