Como dizer "é melhor ler que ser cego" em inglês

Ola!
Sei que é bem rude a frase, mas não achei uma frase "sinônima" que expressasse o mesmo sentimento que essa (após ler uma barbaridade).
Então, gostaria de saber qual a melhor sentença em inglês que expresse o mesmo sentimento ao dizer "é melhor ler do que ser cego" (após ler uma baboseira em algum lugar).
E também a "é melhor ouvir do que ser surdo" (após ouvir uma lorota).

The French also use the sentence "Mieux vaut entendre ça que d’être sourde.", I don't know if it trickled down to Portuguese or vice-versa...
Literal translation: “it's better to listen to that than to be deaf”.
But it could ring metaphorically as the following:
What a stupid thing to say
You've got to be kidding me!
