Como dizer "tido como morto" em inglês

(CNN) -- A 19-year-old Japanese student is presumed dead after she lost her balance Sunday and fell into the churning waters of Niagara Falls, police said Tuesday.

I understand "to take for dead" (very rarely used) to mean that someone has seen the body and mistakenly believed that the victim had died (or was killed). If we do not see someone for 50 years, we do not take him for dead unless we have seen his body.

"To give up for dead", on the other hand, means to give up hope that someone is alive. I hear on the radio that your airplane has crashed and that there were no survivors. Do I take you for dead? No, becAre ause I have not seen your body. Do I give you up for dead? Yes, probably. Are you dead? Nobody knows for sure until your body has been found and examined.

I would say that "to consider dead" and "to give up for dead" have very similar meanings.

Uma expressão muito boa essa também, Donay. Se não me engano, em português tb dizemos "dado como morto"? Em inglês tb dizemos "given for dead."

Mas "to take ... for/to" é muito usado, servindo boas funções. Podemos dizer, por exemplo,

"I take that to mean you won't go." (Entendo que isso significa que vc não irá.) Pode ser usado como um questionamento tb (?).

"What do you take me for?" (O que vc pensa que eu sou? -- geralmente num sentido negativo: pensa que eu sou um bôbo, por ex.)

"Take it for what it is." (Aceite isso como é. É desse jeito mesmo.)

"Don't take it the wrong way." (Não trate isso de maneira errada.)

E muitas outras.
