Na frase "That I had a many problems getting to work.". Qual é a função deste "that" do início? Ele é realmente necessário?

"That" é usado para se afirmar algo, equivale entre outras coisas a "o fato de..."
That no one remembered her birthday left Marta very depressed. [Macmillan]
O fato de ninguém ter se lembrado do aniversário dela, deixou Marta muito deprimida.
