Quando usar Even para "até" ou para "mesmo"?
Gostaria de entender se há alguma regra que possa diferenciar o even quando tem sentido de "até (algo inesperado)" ou de "mesmo".

Well, it can work as an adverb (then with that "ring of surprise" you has mentioned).
Everyone I know likes the smell of bacon - even Mike does and he's a vegetarian.
We were all on time - even Chris and he's usually late for everything.
And the other usages and meanings you can see here, at http://dictionary.cambridge.org/pt/dici ... ngles/even
BTW, the source of the example sentences were from this site (Cambridge dictionary).

One more thing...your "mesmo" wasn´t enough to clarify if it means "até mesmo" or just "mesmo", anyway here goes some types of "mesmo". In the "even " entry on the Michaelis.
