Usos do Gerúndio em inglês

Hi there! I'm bringing a question that appeared to me when I was reading the last post on the blog , about movies.

“How about renting a comedy movie tonight?”

Por que se usa o verbo no gerúndio nessa frase?
Daria pra ser “how about to rent a comedy movie tonight?”? Por quê?

Eu fiz uma pesquisa a respeito dos usos do gerúndio, mas não achei esse caso. Se puderem me explicar e sugerir outras formas possíveis de dizer a mesma coisa...

Thanks in advance!

Because when we put a verb after a preposition, we normally use an -ing form ("gerund"), not an infinitive.

Since grammar manuals give about as a preposition, then a -ing form has to follow it.

How/what about coming with us?
How/what about doing it yourself?

Other examples with a preposition + -ing form.

Evangivaldo didn't think much of going out with Matilde that night.
Evangivaldo and Matilde looked forward to having a nice time together, however.
Do Evangivaldo and Matilde object to working on Sundays?
Otávio has a good chance of making it.

An -ing form may also follow a verb, provided the verb takes an -ing form.

Heitor stopped smoking.
Both Romilda and Renato regretted leaving school at 14--they made a big mistake.

Don't ask me why such and such takes an -ing form, else we might have to go back to the days native speakers of English learned and spoke English for the first time, far back in the 5th century AD.
