Wish + Would VS. Wish + Past

Desconfiando da minha própria explicação (eu uso "wish" e "would" juntos o tempo todo...), fui a procura de alguma autoridade. Resultado: eu errei, e acredito que ninguém quis continuar insistindo, por cortesia. O meu erro foi em tentar aplicar o modelo para a primeira pessoa ("I wish I...). Enfim, a seguir uma boa explicação do que acontece com estruturas combinando "wish" e "would": (eu adicionei a numeração e sublinhei para facilitar)

"The verb to wish

(1)The verb to wish is followed by an ‘unreal’ past tense when we want to talk about situations in the present that we are not happy about but cannot change:

I wish I had more money (=but I haven’t)
She wishes she was beautiful (= but she’s not)
We wish we could come to your party (but we can’t)

(2)When we want to talk about situations in the past that we are not happy about or actions that we regret, we use the verb to wish followed by the past perfect:

I wish I hadn’t said that (= but I did)
He wishes he hadn’t bought the car (= but he did buy it.)
I wish I had taken that job in New York (= but I didn’t, so I’m stuck in Bristol)

NOTE: When we want to talk about situations we are not happy about and where we want someone else to change them, we use to wish followed by would + infinitive:

I wish he would stop smoking. (= I don’t like it, I want him to change it)
I wish you would go away. (= I don’t want you here, I want you to take some action)
I wish you wouldn’t squeeze the toothpaste from the middle! (= I want you to change your habits.)"

Então devemos aceitar que são tres (veja o outro link abaixo) as expressões legítimas:

I wish Maggie was more friendly.
I wish Maggie were more friendly.
I wish Maggie would be more friendly.

"Were" é a forma do subjuntivo, a forma mais tranquilamente literária.

NB: If you wish you wouldn't, it's pretty simple: follow your wish and don't do it.

But maybe what you really wish to say is this:

I wish I were not forgetful about leaving the door open.

And what's wrong with:

I wish people did not leave the door open. (this applies to past, present or future)

Is this a past tense of the indicative, or is it a subjunctive?

I wish (that) you were here. (It's a subjunctive)

My point is, "would" is often unnecessary when you wish to talk about habitual or repeated actions. The past tense, without 'would', is usually sufficient.

A forma preferida seria

I wish Maggie were more friendly.

A outra forma contem um defeito um tanto dificil de explicar, e ademais, é frequente ouvir falantes usarem essa forma. Mas deve ser evitada. Sem entrar em uma explicação complicada sobre tempos verbais, compare estas duas versões de cada enunciado:

I wish (that) I would be rich.
I wish (that) I were rich.

I would be rich if I would win the prize.
I would be rich if I were to win the prize.

Em cada caso, a segunda opção é a correta.

To be honest I can't see the difference between those, I'd use them interchangebly.

We use 'wish' + would + bare infinitive to express impatience, annoyance or dissatisfaction with a present action.
I wish you would stop smoking. (You are smoking at the moment and it is annoying me.)
I wish it would stop raining. (I'm impatient because it is raining and I want to go outside.)
I wish she'd be quiet. (I am annoyed because she is speaking.)
